Immunosuppression,
Prevention, & COVID-19

COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic presents a very tough and challenging time for people across the world. For patients with IBD like us, we are inclined to be more careful because we are often immunocompromised. Take precautions to protect yourself against COVID-19, but do not discontinue any IBD medications before talking with your provider!

Choosing when to go in-person VS. telehealth

  • Reasons to go into a clinic or a testing center (i.e. LabCorp or Quest Diagnostics):

    • Routine blood or lab work

    • Colonoscopy/endoscopy

    • Patient is experiencing flare

  • Reasons to opt for telehealth (i.e. doxy.me):

    • Patient is in remission

    • Routine outpatient appointment

Precautions when you feel sick

  • Stay home

  • Contact your physician/doctor

  • Get tested immediately at a nearby pharmacy or clinic that offers COVID-19 testing

IBD-Specific Precautions

  • Make sure to stay on top of your prescription refills. According to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, there are no reported shortages in any medications used to treat or manage IBD

  • Stay in contact with your GI

  • Continue taking medications unless otherwise instructed by your GI or physician

General Precautions

  • Wear a mask when going out in the public

  • Avoid traveling to public areas unless absolutely necessary (i.e. groceries, medical appointments)

  • Opt for telehealth unless you need to get lab work or a procedure done

  • Socially distance of at least 6 feet from others in public (exception is with people who you currently live with)

  • Avoid close contact with friends/family/colleagues who are sick with flu-like symptoms or an infection

  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds

  • Using hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol

  • Avoid contact with your face

  • Maintain proper hygiene

  • Avoid public events

  • Opting for remote schooling/work

  • Clean and disinfect mail/packages and any frequently touched objects/surfaces
